Types of Cannabis Vape Cartridges
There’s a lot of cartridge types, shapes, materials, and sized on the market, but we’ll try to distill down some of the best cartridge offerings over the next few paragraphs. Let’s start with something that all vape carts have in common first, shall we? The ceramic atomizer.
Ceramic Core Heating
All vape cartridges for cannabis oil use what’s called a ceramic core heating element, also known as the atomizer. The famous CCell brand put itself on the map when some of the the first cannabis carts entered the market and CCell launched their state-of-the-art (at the time) ceramic core atomizer.
Cartridge atomizers use a porous ceramic core, and embedded into the ceramic is the heating coil element. Cannabis oil enters through the intake holes where it is then heated and formed into a vapor for inhalation.
Note: oftentimes, when someone says “ceramic cart”, they really are just referring to the atomizer being ceramic rather than other materials and components being ceramic.
Metal Carts (usually Stainless Steel)
Metal cartridges use a metal center (airflow) post and atomizer housing. Metal carts were the first to enter the market for cannabis oil, and still to this day remain the most popular option due to affordability and having the lowest defect rate.
Metal carts are offered in Stainless Steel or Nickel Plated Copper. Stainless steel is the ideal option to ensure the lowest possible chance of heavy metals. The cost difference to produce the two offerings are negligible, so we recommend choosing stainless steel carts over nickel plated copper when given the choice.
The tanks of metal cartridges come in two material variations; Glass or Polycarbonate. Glass is generally a few cents more expensive to produce than PCTG polycarbonate but also comes with the inherent issue with glass which is fragility. The largest cannabis brands in the world generally choose carts with PCTG tanks due to their affordability and reliability.
Full Ceramic Carts
Full ceramic cartridges have been gaining significant popularity in recent years as the best alternative to standard metal carts. They use a glass tank with a mouthpiece and center post that are 100% ceramic.
They offer a beautiful presentation of your oil and provide a more unique look than the metal options found some commonly in the market. Another bonus of full ceramic cartridges is that they are, you guessed it… ceramic, so heavy metals are not a concern!
Like metal cartridges, full ceramic cartridges are also reliable and affordable to produce so they make for an ideal alternative.
All Glass Carts
All-glass, or sometimes called full-glass carts, are, well… mostly glass! Rather than using a metal or ceramic center airflow post, all glass carts not only use a glass tank but also a glass center post.
All-glass carts offer the most unique presentation of your cannabis oil—one without any visible obstruction.
The downside to all-glass carts are hight cost as well as, not surprisingly, fragility. Most retail and small cannabis brand buyers love all-glass carts for their performance and uniqueness, but they can be a cost prohibitive option to large cannabis brands as well as time consuming to fill and cap in bulk quantities.
Cart Capacities
Historically, the tanks of cartridges for cannabis oil were 0.3g, 0.5g, and 1.0g.
Half gram and full gram carts are still very popular in the marketplace, but it has become tougher to find 0.3g in the marketplace. Why’s that, you ask? It’s looking like the consumer believes bigger is better. We are starting to see larger tank capacities like 2 gram carts become more popular with consumers.
On the all-in-one disposable vape side of carts, we’re even seeing 3-5 gram options hit the market. Most connoisseurs, however, find that as tank capacity becomes larger, flavor is sacrificed as it can become too much oil for the atomizer to handle efficiently.
What’s a 510 Cart?
For all intents and purposes, “510” is used just to describe universality and compatibly. All cartridges for cannabis oil have threading at the base of the cart known as “510” threading. This means the cartridge can be paired with any 510 thread battery. Not to toot our own horn, but VPM has an excellent selection of 510 cart batteries if you’re ever in the market 😉
Carts for different oil types
Distillate may soon be dethroned as the king of the cannabis concentrate of choice for use with vapes and cartridges.
With the rise of options like Live Resin, Live Rosin, and Liquid diamonds, the vape hardware industry has had to adapt. Every oil formulation is different, so that’s why we recommend testing a variety of cartridges to see what pairs best with your specific oil. However, as a general rule, we have noticed our customers like the standard 1.4Ω (ohm) resistance for distillate oil but find that to burn too hot for live resin vapes and live rosin vapes. For Live Rosin cartridges, we suggest using 1.6Ω and 1.8Ω for Live Rosin as these resistances will aide in keeping the atomizer cooler and provide more optimal flavor.
